At least 21 dead after flyover collapses in India
Rescuers in Kolkata dug through large chunks of debris with their bare hands after a flyover collapsed, while under construction, killing at least 21 people and injuring many more. A section of the overpass in the busy Bara Bazaar residential and shopping area in north Kolkata fell on vehicles and people moving underneath, trapping people in their cars, trucks and motorised rickshaws.Army troops and personnel from the National Disaster Response Force joined efforts to rescue people from vehicles that lay under massive concrete blocks and metal debris.
The flyover had been in construction since 2009. The causes of the disaster were not immediately clear, but the company in charge of the construction, IVRCL, said it would cooperate with investigators. Safety issues such as lack of inspections and the use of substandard materials have plagued construction projects in the country.
