Trump open to meeting with Kim Jong Un
US President Donald Trump says he would, under the right circumstances, meet with DPRK leader Kim Jong Un. However, the White House said that a Trump-Kim meeting is unlikely in the near future. President Trump’s comments come after a significant show of force by the US in the region. Washington has deployed the controversial THAAD missile defense system in South Korea and sent an aircraft carrier group and guided missile submarine to the region. How can we unravel Trump’s stance towards the DPRK? We turn to our panel: Zhao Tong, associate professor at the Carnegie-Tsinghua Center for Global Policy; Jonathan Pollack, senior fellow at the John L. Thornton China Center at the Brookings Institution; and Victoria Panova, professor of international relations and foreign policy at the Moscow State Institute of International Relations.
